Mashroo is one of India’s oldest textiles, developed in the 14th century to meet Islamic rules forbidding silk from touching the skin. Woven with a silk warp and cotton weft, it allowed silk to show on the surface while cotton touched the body. Popular among Islamic nobility, Mashroo was also exported to the Ottoman Empire. In Patan, Hindu traders embraced and adapted it with unique motifs, colours, and tie-dye techniques.
